Using banal and cast-off materials to stage portraits in the style of European historical paintings of royalty, warriors, or other figures of authority, Brinkmann riffs on the legacy of portraiture with humor and strange elegance.

""So this principle of being veiled, the faceless, that I'm basically not recognizable. . . . The posturing or this persiflage on poses of a ruler portrait, that this is driven to the extreme again, that was for me in the foreground, but also the handling of the things that actually make the image of the Lord or Royal. . . . So all things that make up the ruler's portrait are transformed, turned upside down. The poses that define the ruler are then satirised by me. . . . The meaning of things changes simply by simply using them differently.""
