Through physical in situ manipulation, Laing takes a sculptural approach to photography, often creating large scale interventions into natural landscapes. With the inverted skeleton of a house colliding with the hillside, Laing’s leak series powerfully depicts how suburbanization threatens and infests the natural Australian landscape.

"I’m trying to re-broker how I can form a visual literacy . . . I have shot so much material in my research of land subjects over 30 years that even when I'm looking at it, I turn it upside down in the studio, to try to see it again. And in that process, I am thinking about where the sky meets the land and the relationship of environmental things, of wind and rain and sunshine, to the ground, and our elastic relationship between those things. . . . I'm trying to put us on the edge of the world, that’s actually here on the globe, spinning in space and to create a disjunction in us, from the security or comfort of thinking we know where we stand when we stand on the ground."
